epidermis
The superficial layer of skin covering the dermis. The epidermis is made up of five superimposed layers, of which the outermost is made up of dead cells. The thickness of the epidermis varies depending on the area of the body; it is very thin around the eyes, and thicker on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.
